Craig's Lies-Picture!

10.jpg Just thought I would post this because it reminds me of Craig a lot. He lies constantly to family, friends, and doctors, saying he doesn't hear voices in his head and that he's "okay" when obviously there is something seriously wrong. Just thought I would show you guys this, :)

  1. Just commenting to make another text-to-world connection! In the beginning of chapter 22, Craig and his new friend Humble are eating lunch in the hospital cafeteria. Humble told Craig, "'There's a lot of yuppies in this place, and you have that look about you, you know- the yuppie look of people with money'" (171). Humble, unlike a normal 'yuppie,' (term for a crazy person) genuinely cares about other people, however, sometimes he still feels the inclination to fight his peers because he despises his environment. This makes him feel like an animal. Craig responds to his comment by saying, "'We're all like animals. Especially now, when we're all in a room eating. It reminds me of high school'" (171). Craig is starting to recognize the shift in his environments. Rather than getting the feeling of intimacy that one experiences when having dinner with a family, Craig feels distant to his peers at North. The fact that this new eating area reminds him of a high school cafeteria suggests his pessimism towards it. This reminded me of the 'animal world' lunch scene in Mean Girls. Here, Cady Herran is demonstrating her resentment towards Regina George for dating her crush Aaron Samuels. Caty says, in animal world, she would fight Regina, and her victory would consequently make Aaron love Caty more. This animal-referenced aggression and stereotypical high school cafeteria scene is similar to that seen in "It's Kind of a Funny Story."

  2. hahaha Yes this is so perfect and made me laugh actually. "You're smart, I see that. We're all animals, high school is animals, but some of us are more animals than others. Like in Animal Farm, which I read, all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others? Here in the real world, all equals are created animal, but some are more animal than others" (207). They are all crazy in some way, it's just who of which are crazier than others and who to watch out for. It makes you think of the ward as a very skeptical place, with no one truly knowing each other but more observing each other and discovering more. It's all a game they play to see who is better, showing their environment is very tense (just like in Mean Girls! Ah! Text-to-world citation!)

  3. That scene was a perfect connection!! I also have another connection from the book to Mean Girls :) In the novel, when Craig first arrives at the ward and Bobby is giving him the tour he says, "I get the feeling that one big no-no in this place is asking people how they got here. It'd be a little like walking up to somebody in prison and going "So? So? What's up, huh? DIdja kill somebody? Didja?" (198). I relate this part to the scene in Mean Girls where Karen asks Cady why she's white. Here's a picture that describes the scene http://data.whicdn.com/images/4930111/tumblr_lbse3knEtG1qc2yc7o1_500_large.png?1289630763
